The Mentawai Islands: Indonesia’s Ultimate Surf Frontier
Located off the west coast of Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands are one of the most wave-rich regions on the planet, a dream destination for surfers from around the world. In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan your trip: the best time to visit, how to get there, what kind of waves to expect, and where to stay on each island.
Mentawai is considered one of the ultimate surf destinations on the planet. With over 70 world-class reef breaks spread across several islands, the region offers consistent, warm, and perfectly shaped waves year-round. It’s a paradise for intermediate to expert surfers looking for the purest Indo surf experience.
Main Surf Zones
1. Playgrounds Region (Northern Mentawai / Siberut)
A dense concentration of world-class waves all within short boat rides — the ultimate Mentawai playground.
Key Waves:
Kandui: one of the best left-hand barrels in the world — fast, shallow, and ultra-perfect.
Rifles: a long, reeling right-hander that can deliver one of the longest barrels on Earth when it’s on.
Bankvaults: heavy, powerful right with deep takeoffs and thick barrels.
E-Bay & Pitstops: more approachable options, ideal when the swell gets smaller.
Vibe: surf camps and high-end resorts with easy boat access to multiple waves.
Good For: intermediate to advanced surfers who want variety and quality.
2. Sipura Island (Central Mentawai)
The most accessible island in the Mentawai chain and home to some of its most famous and diverse waves.
Key Waves:
Lance’s Right (HT’s): the island’s crown jewel — a hollow, mechanical right-hander breaking over sharp reef.
Lance’s Left: a nearby left-hander offering long, fun walls and a great option when the rights get crowded.
Telescopes: a long, clean left with multiple takeoff zones, located toward the north of the island.
Geography: most waves in northern Sipura (like Telescopes) are boat-access, while southern Sipura (Lance’s Right & Left) features several land-based resorts and easy access.
Access: easy to reach by fast ferry from Padang to Tuapejat.
Vibe: relaxed and comfortable, with surf resorts, guesthouses, and surf camps near the beach.
Good For: surfers looking for comfort, consistent surf, and short travel connections.
3. Pagai Islands (Southern Mentawai)
Wild and remote, the southern islands offer some of the most powerful and picturesque waves in Indonesia.
Key Waves:
Macaronis: a perfectly shaped left that’s fast, fun, and flawless — one of the most rippable waves on the planet.
Greenbush: a heavy, barreling left that breaks over a shallow coral ledge; not for the faint-hearted.
Rags Left & Rags Right: consistent and hollow reef breaks for advanced surfers.
Vibe: isolated and raw; accessible mostly by surf charter or dedicated resort transfer.
Good For: experienced surfers seeking powerful, less-crowded perfection.

Best Time to Go
High Season (May–September): consistent Indian Ocean swells, light trade winds, and prime conditions at most breaks.
Shoulder Season (March–April & October–November): still plenty of waves, fewer boats, and less crowded lineups.
Low Season (December–February): smaller swells, more rain, but excellent value and relaxed vibes.

Getting There & Around
Getting to the Mentawai Islands takes a bit of effort, but the reward is world-class surf in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Here’s how to do it step by step:
1. Fly to Padang, West Sumatra
Your journey starts with a flight to Padang (Minangkabau International Airport), the gateway to the Mentawai Islands.
Most travelers arrive from Jakarta, Bali or Kuala Lumpur, with several daily flights.Tip: Spend one night in Padang, as the ferry to the Mentawais usually leaves early the next morning.
We recommend staying at Mercure Padang, a comfortable hotel near the ocean and close to the harbor.2. Take the Fast Ferry to Sipura Island (Tuapejat)
From Padang, you’ll take the Mentawai Fast Ferry, which runs several times per week.
Duration: about 3.5 hours
Destination: Tuapejat, the main town on Sipura Island
Tickets: can be booked online or through your resort/operator
Tip: Sit near the front for less motion, and keep your boards in protective bags — the ferry can get bumpy.
3. Reaching Each Surf Area:
Sipura Island
Tuapejat is your arrival point. From here:
To Northern Sipura (Telescopes area): about 30–45 minutes by boat.
To Southern Sipura (Lance’s Right & Left): around 2 hours by car or 1 hour by speedboat.
Many surf resorts arrange private transfers from the ferry terminal.
Playgrounds Area (Siberut Region)
To reach Playgrounds (where you’ll find Kandui, Rifles, and Bankvaults):
Take a speedboat from Sipura, which takes about 1.5–2 hours, depending on weather.
Most surf camps and resorts in the Playgrounds area organize the transfer directly.
Pagai Islands (South Mentawai)
The most remote islands of the chain, home to Macaronis and Greenbush.
Reached by private speedboat or surf charter from Sipura — about 3–4 hours travel.
Many travelers visit Pagai as part of a boat trip or multi-island surf charter.

Pros
Huge concentration of world-class waves.
Warm, clear water year-round.
Multiple islands and wave types to explore.
Boat charters and resorts for every style of trip.
